Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Francisco Liriano wrapped up a 14-year career in major league baseball on Monday.
The 38-year-old hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2019. Last season, he signed a minor league contract with the Jays, but they released him in the spring.
“I recently spent some time reflecting on my career and thinking about my future. After several discussions with my family, friends and others who care about me, I have decided to retire from professional baseball, he said in a statement released by his agent Robert Murray. I would like to thank all the coaches and fans in the United States and the Dominican Republic who have supported me during my baseball journey.”
A native of San Cristobal, Liriano was once a guest at the All-Star Classic. He has reached 16 wins once, in 2013 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The left-hander played in Toronto in 2016 and 2017, but he played more campaigns with the Minnesota Twins, his first organization.
Lifetime, he went 112-114 with a 4.15 ERA.
