➤ RKI registers 74,405 new corona infections – incidence at 553.2

06:32 am: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has again reported an increase in the nationwide seven-day incidence and thus a new high. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Tuesday morning as 553.2. For comparison: the previous day the value was 528.2, a week ago it was 387.9 (previous month: 306.4). The health authorities in Germany reported 74,405 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 05:06 a.m. A week ago there were 45,690 infections.

According to the new information, 193 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 322 deaths. The RKI has counted 8,074,527 proven infections with SARS-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

The RKI gave the number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days as 3.14 on Monday (Sunday 3.24). The number of people who had recovered was given as 7,050,100 on Tuesday morning. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with SARS-CoV-2 rose to 115,842.

The other Corona news of the day:

Clinics: No increase in the number of terminations due to compulsory vaccination

04:21 am: The facility-related one that will apply from mid-March
According to the German Hospital Society (DKG), compulsory vaccination has so far not led to an increase in the number of dismissals in clinics. “Currently, we have not received any reports from the hospitals about possible layoffs due to the mandatory vaccination that will apply from March 15,” said DKG CEO Gerald Gass of the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday). The vaccination rate in hospitals nationwide is very high at more than 90 percent. “But there are regional differences, and we cannot rule out the possibility of problems occurring at individual locations.” The hospital operators are therefore doing everything they can to do educational and informational work in order to win as many employees as possible for vaccination, said Gass.

The so-called facility-related vaccination requirement stipulates that employees in facilities such as medical practices, clinics and nursing homes must prove by March 15 that they have been vaccinated or have recovered. This is intended to better protect patients and those in need of care from corona infection.

However, the German Nursing Council assumes that this obligation to vaccinate will still lead to layoffs. This affects less the nursing staff, but supporting activities such as care assistants or kitchen and cleaning staff, said Nursing Council President Christine Volger to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday). In these professional groups there is “a somewhat low vaccination rate”. Some of these workers considered “changing jobs if vaccinations become mandatory at their workplace”.

NBA star Irving: I will not be vaccinated despite Durant’s absence

03:33 am: Basketball star Kyrie Irving has expressed his refusal of a corona vaccination in more detail than ever before and has ruled out having an injection against the virus after all. “It’s been my decision for a long time and I stand by it,” said the Brooklyn Nets professional on Monday (local time) after the 107:114 defeat at the Cleveland Cavaliers. Because he is not vaccinated against the corona virus, the 29-year-old is not allowed to appear in the Nets’ home games due to the applicable rules in New York. Only recently, in the face of many failures, did the Nets decide to at least use their top performer away from home after they had previously given up on him.

The week-long absence of teammate Kevin Durant, who may be missing from the Nets until the end of February, does not change his attitude. “Kev will be fine. Kev will be fine and we as his teammates have to deal with that,” said Irving. “But as far as my life outside of all of this goes, I’m sticking to my decision. That’s the way it is.”

He also doesn’t understand that his basketball-related decision is constantly being questioned, Irving said. He stressed how much he enjoys playing for the Nets and with his colleagues, “but I’ve been away long enough to be able to think about all this, to be able to process it and to be able to make this decision, I remain strong”.

More than 70,000 people on the street against Corona measures

12:30 a.m.: As in the weeks before, tens of thousands of people across Germany demonstrated again on Monday evening against corona measures and a possible compulsory vaccination. According to an estimate based on police information, this time there were more than 70,000. The protests were accompanied by a large police presence and in some places by counter-demonstrations. Meetings were broken up several times, for example in Rostock and Cottbus, because the police could not find a leader or because the mask requirement was violated and no mouth and nose protection was worn.

According to the police, 21,000 demonstrators against the corona policy were counted on Monday evening in Thuringia alone, around 14,000 in Bavaria, 11,000 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, around 7,000 in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg, and around 4,000 in North Rhine-Westphalia in Saxony and Berlin about 3,000 each.

Opponents of the Corona policy have been taking to the streets in many places for weeks. They don’t always announce or register the demonstrations. Numerous cities have banned unannounced protests, also known as so-called walks.

In Berlin, one of the larger demos moved from Alexanderplatz in the direction of the Brandenburg Gate, where, according to the banner, “vaccinated and unvaccinated against compulsory vaccination”. Few people wore masks. A loudspeaker car rang out: “Merkel, Spahn, Steinmeier, Drosten to jail”. The train stopped in front of the ZDF capital city studio for an intermediate rally. A speaker insulted the “German media” that were “conformed” like in 1933.

New record values in the pandemic were reported in Germany on Wednesday: 80,430 corona cases within one day, a seven-day incidence of 407.5. But the Federal Republic is not an isolated case: With the rapid spread of the omicron variant, the number of corona cases in Europe has skyrocketed to previously unknown heights.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the atmosphere in the center of Rostock heated up after a meeting had been dissolved, and the police used water cannons at two intersections. The demonstrators were surrounded. An estimated dozen troublemakers were provisionally arrested by police officers. A total of around 3,000 demonstrators and counter-demonstrators came together, in Schwerin around 2,400.

At the Greifswald market, citizens placed more than 1,500 candles to commemorate the corona dead in the north-east. “We want to show that Corona is a reality,” said the alliance “Greifswald for All”.

In Cottbus, Brandenburg, the police broke up a demonstration with around 2,500 participants due to the lack of a leader. In one case, the police had to use tear gas because of resistance. The meeting participant tried to break through a police line. Four people were taken into police custody. Criminal charges were written, among other things, for insult, resistance against law enforcement officers, violation of the weapons law. The identities of 175 people were identified for violating the Assembly Act and administrative offense proceedings were initiated.
