In May of last year, the 38-year-old Englishman captured the world title for the fourth time, beating Kurt Maflin, Mark Allen, Mark Williams, Stuart Bingham and Shaun Murphy along the way. Selby also regained the number one position in the world rankings, a spot he holds to this day.

But at the Masters, the top tournament with the best sixteen snooker players in the world, things went horribly wrong for ‘The Jester from Leicester’. Selby made one mistake after another and lost 6-1 to Barry Hawkins, who lost the final to Neil Robertson on Sunday.

Selby immediately posted an apology on his social media afterward. In doing so, he referred to the fact that he has had “a backlash” in connection with his mental problems. “I promise to seek help and become a better person,” the Englishman wrote.

A day later he went into more detail. “I can honestly say that of all the races I’ve won as a pro, my biggest win is the one where I talked about my problems yesterday. That I’ve admitted that I need help. I’ve been silent about it for years, but that’s not the way to move forward. Finally, there is a lot of pressure off my shoulders.”

Selby also said that he is happy that he “no longer has to hide behind a mask”. He is scheduled to compete in the Shoot Out in his home city of Leicester, a ranking tournament that kicks off on Friday.
