Houston Astros to make confusing name change to Sugar Land Skeeters

The Major League Baseball (MLB) team Houston Astros has decided to change the name of its Minor League Baseball team Sugar Land Skeeters. Notably, in April 2021, the Astros acquired Sugar Land Skeeters, and the acquisition was officially approved by the Sugar Land Council. Pursuant to the acquisition, the Astros and the City of Sugar Land have partnered on a lease extension that will maintain the Skeeters at Constellation field through at least the 2045 season.

According to the official Sugar Land Skeeters website, the Minor League Baseball team will unveil its new name, logo, mascot and uniforms for its Triple-A team later this month on January 29. The Astros will host a launch party at Constellation Field from 4-7 p.m. in Sugar Land to reveal the new name, which will also include the reveal of the new brand, player autographs, live music, fireworks , chalk discussions, etc.

The new name of Sugar Land Skeeters

According to Fox 26’s Mark Berman, the Astros will rename the Sugar Land Skeeters to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Berman reported it after confirming with MLB sources.

After being acquired by the Astros, the Skeeters played their first season as an Astro affiliate in 2021. Sugar Land Skeeters had been an independent team since their establishment from 2012 to 2020.

The Sugar Land Triple-A team will open its 2022 season on April 5 against the Sacramento River Cats and the home opener on April 12 against the Round Rock Express. Since their inception in 2012, the Skeeters have won the Atlantic League titles three times in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Astros owner Jim Crane wanted to change the name to a space theme. Notably, Houston Astros also have a space-related term in their name “Astros”. And according to Mark Berman, the team’s new name will be Sugar Land Space Cowboys.
