The 48-year-old German technician arrived in Ostend in June 2020, after eight years as coach of the RB Leipzig youth teams. He had signed up for two seasons, with an option for an additional year, but will not complete his contract. The KVO announced on Wednesday evening that it had reached an agreement with Genoa, Zinho Vanheusden’s club, which paid the severance pay to the coastal club.
“Everything happened so fast. This case was settled in 24 hours. I still find it hard to believe,” said Alexander Blessin, who already flew to Italy on Wednesday evening. “As the transfer had not yet been finalized, I could not physically say goodbye to the players after training. I will probably contact them. I will also miss the fans. I could not refuse the offer from Genoa. It’s a traditional club in Serie A and I was offered a long-term project. It’s a great step in my career but I will always be grateful to the KVO for giving me my chance. My family and I have always felt at home here and will miss everyone. I hope to be able to come back one day to be able to say goodbye as it should be.”
It is assistant Markus Pflanz who will take over as interim head of the coastal club, 15th in the D1A with 23 points. KVO will host Antwerp on Friday at the start of the 23rd day of the championship.
