Football: Tottenham makes a brilliant comeback

Tottenham made a brilliant comeback in a supplementary game in the English Premier League. Steven Bergwijn turned the game at Leicester City on Wednesday night with two goals in added time. Manchester United also won their match at Brentford, albeit not as spectacularly as Spurs.

Dutchman Bergwijn was the hero of Tottenham’s 3-2 (1-1). He came on in the 79th minute and secured the victory for the guests with two goals in injury time (95th, 97th). Patson Daka (24th) gave Leicester the lead, Harry Kane (38th) equalized for Spurs before the break. James Maddison (76th) brought his team forward again – until Bergwijn’s late double strike. Tottenham are now fifth with Leicester tenth.

“My team showed that they don’t give up and fight to the end,” said Tottenham coach Antonio Conte after the match. “We didn’t deserve this defeat but we have to learn from it,” said Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers. “They won the game because of our mistakes.”

“Joker” Bergwijn turned things around in stoppage time

A furious comeback had already taken place in the Premier League in May 2012. Back then, Manchester City scored twice in the 92nd and 94th minutes and beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2. Man City secured the championship title.

Ronaldo failed to score when returning to starting XI

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the starting XI after injury in Man United’s 3-1 win at Brentford. But others scored the goals: Anthony Elanga (55′), Mason Greenwood (62′) and Marcus Rashford (77′) scored within 22 minutes. Ivan Toney’s goal (85′) came too late for Bentford. Manchester remain seventh in the table.
