Australian Open 2022: Harmony Tan taken off the pitch in a wheelchair

She fought bravely, but in the end French tennis player Harmony Tan couldn’t finish her match against Elina Svitolina. On the contrary: she had to be driven off the field.

Bitter tournament end for the French Harmony Tan. The 24-year-old had to break off her second round match against Elina Svitolina from Ukraine injured and exhausted. At the score of 3:6, 7:5 and 1:5, the bravely fighting Tan just dragged herself across the field, so that even the referee talked her into it – and the game came to an end.

Serve from below after medical timeout

In fact, Tan’s pain appeared to be so severe that she was unable to perform and had to be wheeled off in a wheelchair to encouraging applause from the crowd at Margaret Court Arena.

When the score was 1:4 in the fourth set, Tan took a “medical timeout” to possibly find his way back into the match. Her physiotherapist taped her lower leg. However, just minutes after Tan’s return to the pitch, it was clear that the world No. 107 would be unable to complete the game.

Tan leaned on her racquet and had to serve from below. Even her mother, who was sitting in the stands, gestured for her to end the game early so as not to risk an even worse injury.

The right-hander, who was born in Paris, prevailed in the first round 6: 3 and 6: 3 against Kazakhstan Juljaa Putinzeva and thus worked out the match against Svitolina. Only for the second time in her career, after the French Open 2021, had she reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament.
