“Years of experience has kept Sergio Perez afloat next to Verstappen at Red Bull” – F1journaal.be

According to Damon Hill, Sergio Perez was better than his predecessors last season in making a fist at Red Bull, something Hill attributes to the Mexican’s years of experience.

“We’ve seen so many drivers having difficulties at Red Bull, drivers having to leave the team,” Damon Hill said on the ‘F1 Nation’ podcast.

“I always had the feeling that Checo, because of his enormous experience, could go more against the ‘forces’ within Red Bull, things that make it so difficult for a young driver.”

In recent years we have seen, among others, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly underperform at Red Bull, despite the fact that they often have the necessary talent.

“For example, Gasly was even allowed to make the switch from Toro Rosso to Red Bull in 2019, only to be replaced again himself due to ‘underperformance’.

Over the past two seasons, however, Gasly has performed particularly strongly at AlphaTauri, to the extent that there has been speculation that he could return to Red Bull. In 2020, Gasly also won the Italian GP, his first and only F1 win to date.

“Gasly has obvious talent,” said Hill. “He can get the most out of the car, something he does on a regular basis.”

“He also seems to have confidence, without being full of himself. The question is, however, what happens when such a driver goes to Red Bull.”
