Go Ahead Eagles has reached the quarterfinals of the cup tournament at the expense of sc Heerenveen. In the Abe Lenstra Stadium, Kees van Wonderen‘s team won 1-0.
Heerenveen started the game strongly. Go Ahead goalkeeper Andries Noppert made a great save on an attempt by Anthony Musab. Not much later, Tibor Halilović shot narrowly wide. However, it was Go Ahead that took the lead after fifteen minutes of play. After a smooth attack, Iñigo Córdoba headed home.
The Frisians then went looking for the equalizer, but fell further and further during the first half.
Little spectacle
In a less spectacular second half, Go Ahead easily kept Heerenveen far away from their own sixteen-meter area. On behalf of the Frisians, Filip Stevanović was close to equalizing, but the Serb shot into the hands of Noppert. The Eagles’ danger came from the switch. For example, Philippe Rommens hit the post after a smooth counter.
There was little talk of a real final offensive at Heerenveen. The Frisians barely managed to create any danger for Noppert’s goal. Defender Rami Kaib was closest to the equalizer in stoppage time with a shot just wide.
