In addition to the seagulls and cormorants, you could also see flamingos along the coast in Ter Heijde today.
“It is not surprising that they are there,” says Geert van Poelgeest of nature organization Natural Delfland. “They have been seen more often in the Zeeland and South Holland waters.” The beachgoers thought it was very special. The critters have been photographed multiple times by passers-by.
The birds may have been Chilean flamingos. Just across the border in Germany is the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve, where a colony of Chilean flamingos breeds. Outside the breeding season are the birds often spotted in the Netherlands.
