Cincinnati Reds signed Australian prospect

Cincinnati Reds signed Australian prospect Ben Walmsley during the international market of the Major League Baseball (MLB).

Trey Hendricks, the Reds’ director of international scouting, received good reports during the pandemic on Walmsley from scout Matt Everingham and the region’s international scouting agent, Boomer Prinstein.

“No one could even get there. Interstate travel in Australia was closed for a long time. It was definitely a challenge to assess Ben, like other Australian players, the last two years. But this is one that we identified early, stayed and it worked,” he said.

Former outfielder Donald Lutz will also be a Cincinnati scout in that country on the ocean continent. Lutz was the first player developed by Germany to play in the Major Leagues, and he also saw action in Australia during winter ball.

Australian Cincinnati Reds prospect with a 90+ mph fastball

The 17-year-old left-handed pitcher has a fastball that can reach 91 mph, and his delivery is in the strike zone.

Walmsley continues to develop his other pitches. The breaker has the sensation of turning, and the change is in the process of being learned. His arm doesn’t show much mileage after playing in this area.

Cincinnati Reds prospect Ben Walmsley hopes in the not too distant future to increase the number of Australians in the MLB, where to date there are 33.
