Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira was disappointed with the referee’s decision when his team clashed with Liverpool. He questioned the penalty prize for The Reds.
Crystal Palace meet Liverpool in week 23 of the 2021/2022 Premier League. The match was held at Selhurst Park, Sunday (23/1/2022) evening WIB.
Liverpool played dominant in the first half and won 2-0 until halftime. Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who successfully broke into the home team’s goal.
Crystal Palace came back in the second half and pulled back through Odsonne Edouard’s goal in the 55th minute. The Eagles almost scored the equalizer through golden opportunities from Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise which did not produce results.
Disaster struck Crystal Palace before normal time ran out. The referee, based on VAR considerations, pointed to the penalty spot for Liverpool for Vicente Guaita’s foul on Diogo Jota.
Fabinho as the penalty taker successfully scored Liverpool’s third goal from the penalty spot. Game over for the win The Reds 3-1.
The referee’s decision to award Liverpool a penalty was questioned by Patrick Vieira. The Frenchman considered the contact fight between Guaita and Jota not a violation at all.
“Wrong decisions by the referee have a big impact on the game. You have to ask the referee to talk to you and explain the decision himself,” Vieira told BBC.
“I think [Diogo] Jota is very smart. Football is about contact. We had meetings with the referees and they told us that football is about contact and that contact is part of the game. They are wrong now.”
“I’m really frustrated with the decision. I’ve seen it many times, there’s never been a penalty like that. When we scored the game was there for us to try to get a draw, but the referee killed us today,” he said. Patrick Vieira.
This defeat made Crystal Palace failed to push into the top 10 of the Premier League standings. Conor Gallagher cs is in 13th place with 24 points.
