Tunisia managed to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The Eagles of Cartagena eliminated the favorite team of champions Nigeria.
Nigeria vs Tunisia in the round of 16 of the 2021 African Cup of Nations took place at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua, Cameroon, Monday (24/1/2022) early morning WIB. Nigeria is more favored in this match because it advanced to the round of 16 with perfect points in the group phase. Meanwhile, Tunisia to the knockout phase only with the status as the best third place.
Although seeded on paper, this match is not necessarily easy for Nigeria. Tunisia gave fierce resistance until the first half ended in a goalless draw.
Two minutes into the second half, Tunisia surprised Nigeria by being able to score. The goal was born through Youssef Msakni from a hard kick from long distance.
Nigeria’s steps in this match were getting tougher after Alex Iwobi got a red card in the 66th minute. The referee gave a direct red card to Iwobi after reviewing VAR. Iwobi was sent off by the referee for stepping on Msakni’s ankle.
Playing with 10 players, Nigeria failed to catch up until the game ended. The score 1-0 for Tunisia’s victory closed the match. Msakni et al made a surprise by qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Tunisia will meet Burkina Faso in the last eight. In the previous match, Burkina Faso first confirmed a place in the quarterfinals after overthrowing Gabon 7-6 on penalties at the Stade de Limbe.
The match Burkina Faso vs Gabon had to be decided on a penalty shootout after the two teams drew 1-1 for 120 minutes.
Burkina Faso opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Bertrand Traore. This goal at once made up for the failure of the Aston Villa striker’s penalty 10 minutes earlier in the 18th minute.
However, Gabon can force the game to continue into extra time. Adam Guira made an own goal in the 90th minute + 1 to make the position a 1-1 draw.
The score did not change until the extra time round was completed. In the high-fives round, the match must go to the sudden death round until the 9th kicker. Ismahila Ouédraogo’s penalty ensured Burkina Faso won 7-6 to advance to the quarter-finals.
