Don’t expect the NFL“>New York Giants to opt for a change to the quarterback position in 2022.
Team co-owner John Mara was tough on Wednesday during a press conference to introduce new general manager Joe Schoen.
“We’re not going to trade for Deshaun Watson,” he said. “There are so many reasons why we won’t do this. On the one hand, it would be impossibly as to the payroll available. But more importantly, with all the allegations (against him), he doesn’t square with us.
Jones has been the quarterback for the past three years in New York, having been selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft.
Watson wants the Houston Texans to trade him, who did not play in 2021 due to 22 charges of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior against him.
Schoen pointed out that Watson’s status wasn’t even a subject in the process leading up to his promotion as David Gettleman’s replacement.
For now, the Giants find themselves $5 million over the salary cap imposed by the NFL. Jones has one year left on his rookie contract.
Schoen and a new head coach, who should be announced within a week, will therefore have to make a decision regarding the status of their general beyond 2022.
They will have until May before they have to make a decision on Jones’ option year for the 2023 season.
Jones has missed the final six games of the 2021 schedule with a neck injury. It is expected, however, that he will be available for the start of the next campaign.
