Egypt ousts Ivory Coast in penalty shootout

Egypt successfully made it to the quarter-finals of the 2021 African Cup of Nations. A 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast for 120 minutes, Mohamed Salah et al won on penalties 5-4.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 match between Ivory Coast vs Egypt was held at the Stade Omnisport de Douala, Wednesday (26/1/2022) night WIB. Ivory Coast spread threat in the third minute through Franck Kessie kick from outside the penalty box, but deviated slightly to the right.

Egypt threatened back in the 17th minute when Omar Marmoush’s shot hit the post. Mohamed Salah’s opportunity four minutes later was denied by the goalkeeper.

Another pressure from Egypt in the 36th minute ran aground. Mostafa Mohamed’s shot to the bottom right corner welcomed Salah’s pass, which was pushed over by Badra Sangare.

Ivory Coast responded, but Ibrahim Sangare’s shot was stopped by the goalkeeper. Another opportunity from Sebastien Haller can also be secured. The first half ended.

Ivory Coast wasted opportunities in the 70th minute. Haller had a chance from close range, but his header was cleared by the goalkeeper.

Nicolas Pepe’s kick in the 75th and 78th minutes has not produced results. Until the 90 minutes were over, no goals were created and the game was continued into extra time.

Both teams are still deadlocked in the extra 30 minutes. The score was 0-0 unchanged so the winner was determined on penalties.

Ivory Coast’s first two kickers, Pepe and Ibrahim Sangare, successfully carried out their duties. Likewise with Egypt’s first two executioners, namely Zizo and Amr El Soleya.

Eric Bailly, who came forward as Ivory Coast’s third kicker, failed to find the ball into the net after his shot into the bottom left corner was caught by the goalkeeper. Omar Kamal who advanced as the next executioner from Egypt managed to score a goal.

Maxwel Cornet and Wilfried Zaha did their job for Ivory Coast. But the executions of Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohamed Salah ensured Egypt won 5-4 on penalties and qualified for the quarter-finals.

Next in the quarterfinals, Egypt will play Morocco.
