Kick-off for the World Skills adventure

40 young professionals – including a young Zuger – are preparing for World Skills 2022 in Shanghai.

This year will undoubtedly be an unforgettable one for 40 young professionals. Thanks to the victory at the Swiss Skills in autumn 2020, they will travel to the World Skills in Shanghai from October 12th to 17th, where a total of 1400 athletes from 83 countries will demonstrate their skills in 60 disciplines.

The starting signal for the World Cup adventure was fired last weekend: the Swiss delegation met for a team event in Aargau. On Friday they completed a health and fitness check in Bellikon. On Saturday, the 38 experts joined the group in Oberentfelden, and some former medal winners reported on their World Championship experiences. The highlight of the weekend was the presentation by the renowned judo trainer Leo Held.

Zug medal hope

The ambitious national team also includes five Central Swiss, including Ivo Müller (21) from Zug. Last summer he completed his apprenticeship as a polymechanic EFZ at Bucher Hydraulics AG in Neuheim, where he is still employed. A large part of his World Cup training consists of his daily work. “My boss Peter Böhi gives me a wide range of tasks,” says Ivo. In addition, there is the work with his expert Jürg Marti, with whom he talks twice a week on the phone. He also visits Neuheim in person once or twice a month to analyze specific problems with Ivo.

The two only find out shortly before the start of the competition what exactly will be in demand in Shanghai. An advantage for Ivo: “Thanks to our dual vocational training system, we Swiss are better able than others to react quickly and effectively to unforeseeable situations.” And with what destination is he going to China? “I want to be able to say after the competition that I’ve reached my full potential,” says Ivo. If he succeeds, his chances of a medal would be “very good”.
