Absent from the courts since June, Dominic Thiem will return to competition next week. His father believes that we should not expect great results before March.
This Monday, Dominic Thiem will occupy the 37th place in the ATP rankings due to the loss of points in his final at the Australian Open 2020. The 28-year-old Austrian has never been so poorly ranked since May 2015. Injured on the wrist since last June during a match against Adrian Mannarino on the turf of Mallorca, the former world No. 3 has chained packages for seven months, notably missing three Grand Slam tournaments. But next week, the man with 17 titles on the ATP circuit (including the US Open 2020) will make his comeback to competition, on the clay courts of Cordoba, Argentina., where he will be seeded No. 2 (Diego Schwartzman being No. 1) and where he will play for the first time in his career. But according to his father Wolfgang, who spoke in an Austrian newspaper, do not expect great results right away.
Thiem in great shape for Indian Wells?
“He is fine, everything is in order with his wrist. But do not expect miracles after this difficult injury. Even if everything is well healed, the problem of a possible overload is still present. It’s like a skier – if he tore a cruciate ligament, he also has muscle problems. If all goes as planned, it should be fully competitive again from mid‐March in Indian Wells. After Cordoba, Dominic Thiem will continue his South American tour on clay with tournaments in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile. He will then continue with the two North American Masters 1000 on hard, in Indian Wells and Miami. If his wrist allows it, of course. With only 185 points to defend by early March, the Austrian can begin his comeback to secure seeded status at Roland-Garros.
