Daniil Medvedev is in the final of the Australian Open. During the semifinals, the Russian rudely insults the referee. In other sports he would have been disqualified. But this way he achieves exactly what he wants.

US-Open champion Daniil Medvedev has made it into the final of the Australian Open for the second time, where he meets Rafael Nadal. In the second semi-final in Melbourne on Friday, the Russian number two in the tennis world beat Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas 7: 6 (7: 5), 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1.

At the Australian Open 2021, the 25-year-old also won against Tsitsipas in the semifinals, but then missed the title against Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic.

The way to the final was marked by an outburst of anger. In the second sentence, Medvedev started a dispute with the referee. The Russian was angry because Tsitsipas had allegedly been coached by his father from the stands for the entire game. This is forbidden in tennis and would have to be prevented by the referee.

“Look at me, I’m talking to you!”

Medvedev yelled at the referee in words that would have meant disqualification in many other sports but not in tennis: “Are you stupid? His father can coach after every point! Can you answer my question?” And further: “Oh, my God! Oh my God! You are so bad man! How can you be so bad in the semifinals of a Grand Slam? Look at me, I’m talking to you!”

The Russian also demanded a penalty for his opponent, instead he received a warning himself. But nothing more. And so Medvedev achieved his goal. After the debate, the chief referee positioned himself near the Tsitsipas box and monitored the father’s intervention.

Although Medvedev lost the second set, he was no longer in danger after that and won rounds three and four without any major problems. He then apologized for his freak out. Which was probably easy for him, Medvedev had finally won.
