The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has announced a new squad for the Continental Team Championship, placing importance on performances at the two All India Ranking tournaments played in Chennai and Hyderabad last month.
The players were selected based on the cumulative ranking points scored in the two events.
“We have been considering national tournaments for some time for selection and directly select players from the world’s top 25. But with most senior players recovering from Covid and injuries, this is a good opportunity for us to give the bench opportunities to make their mark in the tournament,” said BAI Secretary Ajay Singhania. in a press release.
The men’s team had won the bronze medal at the last edition of the tournament in Manila, Philippines, while the women’s team had been withdrawn due to the pandemic as most of the players then were unwilling to travel. .
The men’s doubles charge will be led by PS Ravi Krishna and Udaykumar Shankarprasad of Kerala, who also impressed with their performance against the experienced Malaysian combination of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi at the India Open.
The combination of Simran Singhi and Khushi Gupta with experienced Aarthi Sara Sunil and Riza Mahreen would look to make their mark in women’s doubles.
