You the news, we a little bit!
VELO fought for one last chance to make it to the play-offs, but it now seems to have been forgiven. After a strong performance by the women’s doubles Cheryl Seinen and Kirsten de Wit, there was soon a 1-0 lead on the board. Opponents Myke Hylkema and Milou Lugters were able to follow reasonably well in the first game (21-15) but in the second game our ladies were supreme. After 11-3 at the break, Cheryl and Kirsten stepped off the track as clear winners. They also won the second game 21-11.
It was not so easy for the men. Adam Hall and Alex Vlaar lost the first game 21-16 and then won the second with the same numbers. In the third game, they trailed 4-0 against Jim Middelburg and Russell Muns. But that deficit was already undone at the break (11-8). A very strong second part of the game resulted in a 21-14 win.
Dennis Koppen had a great start against the national number 4 of the Netherlands Nick Fransman. He took a 10-3 lead but Nick was able to narrow the gap after the break (11-6) and even get to game point (20-19). Dennis got rid of that and came to gamepoint himself. But Nick still came out on top with 3 points in a row (23-21). Also in the second game the men made a great match. Dennis was able to follow well (9-11) but Nick turned out to be too strong in the end and with 21-17 just a bit stronger. Nevertheless a good performance from Dennis.
Estelle van Leeuwen played a strong first game against Fredrika Lagerstedt. With 21-12 she seemed to play out the game easily. But in the second it went less. Fredrika saw her chance and took advantage of it. She deservedly won the game 21-16. In the decisive third game, Estelle recovered and took the lead again (11-7). She saw Fredrika come close at the end of the game but came with a subtly placed shuttle at match point which she immediately used. Estelle took the win in the match 21-18.
Sebastiaan Li had no problem with Dion Rovers. He quickly took the lead and gradually built it up. Dion played well but Sebastian was lord and master. 21-11 was the first game for him. It wasn’t much different in the second game. Sebastiaan handed out the sheets and Dion was often left behind. The second game also went to Sebastiaan with large numbers (21-9).
An exciting first game between Diede Odijk and Hanna Couwenhoven. An equal party that went right up. With a nice drop shot, Diede set himself on the first game point and it was immediately hit. With a 21-18 win, she was ready for the second game. Diede took a quick 6-0 lead. She kept that big lead almost the entire game and took the second game unthreatened 21-15.
The first match in the mixed doubles was tied in the first game. After 11-9, Cheryl and Adam proved to be the strongest with 21-17. Against Myke and Jim, they got off to a great start in the second game and took a 10-1 lead. That turned out to be enough to turn the second game into a win. With 21-12, the first mix was for Almere.
Kirsten and Alex also played a good match. Against Milou and Russell, it took the lead in the game to take it 21-18. But in the second game, they trailed 8-4. That was almost completely repaired at the break (10-11) and then struck. With a strong game they took the lead so as not to relinquish it. With 21-15 Kirsten and Alex put a nice 7-1 win on the scoreboard.
That means another step towards the final. But in the second game of the weekend, DKC is waiting, which is almost eliminated for the play-offs, but which certainly does not want to give the points as a gift. The match in The Hague starts at 2 p.m.
