Quentin Halys allowed himself to correct (6-1, 6-2) the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, seeded number 7 in the tournament, this Monday in the 1st round in Pune (India). The Ile-de-France Challenger regular and ranked 141st had not spent a lap on the ATP circuit since August 2018. Daniel Altmaier also qualified.
Quentin Halys got off to a strong start in Pune (India), one of the weakest on the circuit. However, for his return to an ATP tournament, the Francilien accustomed to the Challengers offered himself one of the top seeds on Monday. It is moreover a correction (6-1, 6-2 in 1h14 of play) that the 140th in the world ranking, released in the second round of qualifying for the Australian Open three weeks ago, inflicted on the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, 82nd at ATP and seeded number 7 in the Indian tournament which also includes Aslan Karatsev (n°1), Lorenzo Musetti (n°2) or another Italian Gianluca Mager (n°3). For the reunion between the two players, a little less than four months after the Frenchman’s success (already) against Berankis in the second round of the Mouilleron-Le-Captif tournament, Halys defeated the Lithuanian.
The seventh victory on the circuit for Halys
A performance that was all the more unexpected despite the score of this last confrontation, which dated from the beginning of October, that the player born in Bondy had not won a match on the ATP circuit for three and a half years and his success against Luxembourger Gilles Muller in the first round of the Mexican tournament in Los Cabos. Since the beginning of his career, Halys, aged 25, had moreover won only six games on the circuit before Monday. And why not add an eighth victory, in the second round against the Polish Majchrzak. Especially now that his picture, with however a possible quarter-final against Musetti, has cleared up. Daniel Altmaier, the other top seed in contention on Monday, on the other hand held his rank. The German player, 85th in the world and seeded n°5, got rid of the Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran, 228th in the world and invited by the organizers, with a score of 7-6, 6-2 in 1h40. Altmaier was however mistreated in the first set, being led 3-1 then 5-4, service to follow for his opponent, but he was able to come back to 3-3 then 5-5 by saving a set point, before to pocket the set in the tie-break (7-5). The German, who served 11 aces in this match, however, took place in the second set, with breaks at 0-0 and 4-2. Next opponent: the Moldovan Radu Albot.
