Davis Cup 2021: Hewitt leaves Kyrgios, doubles champion in Australia, out of Davis

La Nick Kyrgios win in Australian Open doubles draw , along with Kokkinakis, has not been enough for the captain of the ‘aussie’ Davis Cup team, Lleyton Hewitt, to include him in the group with a view to Australia’s tie with Hungary.

Hewitt opted for newcomers Luke Saville, John Peers, Alex de Minaur, Alexei Popyrin and brought in Thanasi Kokkinakis, a doubles winner in Australia alongside Kyrgios, for the March 4-5 matches in Sydney.

“Alex has had the most recent success in Sydney and has had some of his best results last month,” said Hewitt. “Thanasi had a fantastic Australian summer. He really cemented himself as one of the top 100 players again.”

And as for the selection of Kokkinakis, which he has been called up for the first time since 2015 and it will be his fifth Davis Cup appearance, Hewitt noted that “to win the Australian Open in doubles, this will give him a lot of confidence going into this tie.”
