The pace struggled to take on the lawn of Paul-Lignon. Not very offensive in the first period, the Valenciennes were content to play against. Opposite, Laurent Peyrelade’s men tried to win on a few occasions, including a free kick from Boissier in the 10th minute, then a shot from Obiang in the 26th, which landed in the gloves of the opposing goalkeeper.
It took until the last ten minutes of play to see the blood and gold wake up the game with a cross shot (36th) and a chisel (39th) from David. The Valenciennes responded with a shot from Dilliberto repelled by Mpasi, followed by a volley from Boissier stopped by the right post (45th). A ball that could have allowed the Ruthenians to open the scoring if it had not ended up in the side netting on a recovery from David.
In the second half, the first Valenciennes free kick, a few minutes after the resumption (48th), was only the first of a series (55th, 66th, 90th + 2) which could put Rodez in danger. Laurent Peyrelade’s players were able to count on a strike from Danger (60′), a free kick from Boissier saved by the Valenciennes goalkeeper (72′), a long cross from Leborgne (82′) and a free kick from Buadès (90’+1) to trying to take control of the game. However, no action allowed one of the two formations to take the advantage.
