Willem Janssen will stop as a professional footballer after this season. However, the FC Utrecht captain had several options to work for another club. VVV-Venlo and Roda JC called for the central defender last transfer period.
Janssen tells that Football International† He announced on Wednesday that he would stop playing professional football after this season. Just before the winter break, Janssen lost his base place in the Domstad, after which he took the decision to put an end to it after this season.
“I was still approached in January,” Janssen tells WE† “For next season, by two different clubs. One club immediately, who asked what the situation was like, to finish the season there on a rental basis. I said: I’m going to think about it for a while, but actually I knew immediately that this wasn’t going to be him. It’s Utrecht or not.”
Initially, Janssen did not want to tell which clubs it was about, but eventually he gave in. “Venlo did call, yes. Roda also called. Of course, I had a great time there. You don’t deny where you come from, but we really feel at home here,” Janssen refers to his time in Utrecht. “Are you going to give that up for another year to finish there? What does it add? I wondered. Often it can only be disappointing.”
There is a good chance that he will remain active at Utrecht after this season. In what role exactly, Janssen dares not say yet.
