Kyrgios: Wants to be more than a tennis player

The Australian stands by his show and wants to be known for his special way: “I don’t care how I’m perceived because the people around me know that I’m a caring person. I’m always myself. Me I’m confident and try to help others,” explained Kyrgios. “I’ve always been like this since I was a little kid. I’ve always been emotional and theatrical on the pitch.”

Kyrgios wants to be understood as a counterpoint to the “Big Three”: “There’s Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. I want the children to think: ‘If the guy can do it, then maybe we can too’,” said Kyrgios.

It is important to the doubles winner of the Australian Open that he also makes an impression away from the tennis court: “I want to be remembered as an icon – as someone who just went out and did it in his own way.”

Kyrgios failed early in singles at this year’s Australian Open, but caused a big sensation in doubles and won the title alongside his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.
