Faye Njie became the mascot of an entire club. The judoka, evolving in less than 73 kilos, was supported by sixty members of the JC Coulommiers (Seine-et-Marne) the weekend of February 5 and 6, in Paris, during the Grand Slam at the Accor Arena.

His story is quite incredible. Born in Helsinki from a finnish mom and a Gambian dad, Faye Njie has dual nationality. “Five years ago, I started internships in The Gambia. Faye regularly came next every year before the pandemic. The number one sport in this country is traditional wrestling. He is a university student and a high-level athlete, he is preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, so he joined Coulommiers, ”underlines his national team coach, Rémy Vanwymeersch.

In September, the athlete takes his license at the Coulommiers club, he wins three tournaments: Bourges, Epinal and Paris Kyoto. “Faye has already participated in the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, he is agile, flexible, he is a technician who feels good judo”, continues Rémy Vanwymeersch.

He will try to participate in his third Olympics

The Columérian coach continues: “Judo is about mutual aid and mutual prosperity. Our club is open to others. You should know that we have three Franco-Gambians at the club: the Paziaud brothers, 16, 18 and 19 years old. In addition to Faye, a Gambian under 81 kilos will join our club in March”.

The City of Coulommiers sent encouragement to the 28-year-old judoka before the international tournament, he did well. He beats a Ghanaian then number 11 in the world rankings. He loses against the world number 1, a Japanese, then against the number 3, a Mongolian and ends up seventh.

“We prepare him for the Paris Olympics, he trains in Paris and Coulommiers. He also helps me with the lessons”, concludes Rémy Vanwymeersch. Discreet boy, Faye Njie gained several places in the standings and moved up to 28th, a hell of a life course for the one who was the first Gambian judoka to compete in the Olympics !
