Gianluigi Donnarumma is hated by some AC Milan fans for moving to Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma felt Milan was also at fault in the transfer.
The young Italian goalkeeper started his career at Milan from junior level then was promoted to the first team when he was 16 years old in 2015. Donnarumma then rose to fame and was even predicted to be the successor to the legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
However, after six years Donnarumma finally stopped wearing the uniform Rossoneri last summer. The 22-year-old player rejected a new contract offer from Milan which was suspected of having a salary problem.
In the process Gianluigi Donnarumma left AC Milan as a free agent to join PSG. Donnarumma’s departure was not accepted by some Milanisti, who considered him a mercenary and called him “Dollarumma”.
In his interview with The Gazzetta dello Sport, Donnarumma reveals his farewell to Milan. Donnarumma was suddenly informed that the club had brought in a new goalkeeper.
“Everyone blamed me, without thinking about what happened on the other side. The last call from Milan they told me they had signed a new goalkeeper. That’s how it ended,” Donnarumma was quoted as saying. Football-Italia.
“I think PSG is my destiny. They have followed me for many years and have always made sure that I know their interests. Everyone at the club makes me feel important, from President Al-Khelaifi to director Leonardo. I am happy and proud to be here.” said the winner of this European Cup champion medal.
Milan director Ricky Massara responded to Donnarumma’s comments regarding his transfer to PSG. Milan brought in Mike Maignan to replace Donnarumma. A decisive decision because Maignan appeared brilliant.
“We thought contacting him was a gesture we should have done out of courtesy, after he turned down our offers. So we told him we had to look for an alternative,” Massara said.
“It was fair that we told him directly before the announcement that we had signed a new goalkeeper. We thought he would appreciate the gesture. Now we are very happy to have Maignan at Milan and wish Gigio a great career,” he added of Donnarumma.
