Hot rumours: Sinner and Piatti before separation – tennis

A corona infection is currently putting South Tyrol’s tennis star Jannik Sinner out of action. Nevertheless, the 20-year-old is not calm. A report that Sextner and his trainer Riccardo Piatti should end their cooperation attracts international attention.

The fact that Jannik Sinner made it into the top 10 in the world rankings is thanks to Riccardo Piatti. That’s what Sesto always said. The Italian tennis guru, who took Sinner under his wing at his academy at the age of 13 and shaped him into one of the best professionals in the whole world, describes the youngster as “the most talented player I’ve ever had”. According to consistent media reports, which almost shook the tennis world on Friday evening, the father-son relationship is now coming to an end.

As the Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport reported, in addition to Sinner’s tennis break, there is not only a corona infection, but also the separation from Piatti. If true, that would be a big surprise. Especially since Sinner had declared at the Australian Open that after the tournament in Melbourne he would complete the second phase of the pre-season – with Piatti. Also due to Sinner’s statements, according to which a super coach should complement his team and in no way replace it, a separation seems unthinkable. Apparently, the 20-year-old changed his mind after the quarter-final defeat against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Melbourne.

However, another alternative could also be an amicable separation. The 63-year-old Piatti had often emphasized that he wanted to take things a little easier, which is why he only occasionally accompanied Sinner to tournaments. And so mostly Andrea Volpini looked after the world number 10. An indication? Maybe, but nothing more.

The next few days and weeks will show whether the rumors are true. One thing is certain: an end to the collaboration would come as a complete surprise at this point in time – and would represent a turning point in Jannik Sinner’s young career.
