‘Unforgivable’ goalkeeper decision by Schmidt: ‘Then we saw him down to the armpits’

Ronald Waterreus cracks hard nuts about the goalkeeper carousel at PSV. The 51-year-old former goalkeeper of the Eindhoven team finds it ‘unforgivable’ that Yvon Mvogo was victimized again by trainer Roger Schmidt after one match.

Waterreus understood that Joël Drommel lost his starting spot. “Drommel has simply brought too little, he has not played well over a far too long period,” he says in the Shoot Willy Podcast by Football International† “So that change had to come at some point.”

Mvogo got the chance in the Eredivisie top match against AZ, but the story is known. The Swiss passed under a ball and led in Jesper Karlsson’s winning goal. Schmidt was particularly critical and again opted for Drommel in the cup match with NAC Breda. “I read the line-up and I was really angry. I have been a keeper myself and I know: this is not possible,” Waterreus responds. “Mvogo has now been hit to the bone. I can follow what happened before the game with AZ. During that game he made an error of judgment that keepers who have not played for six months make.”

The statement by Schmidt that he opts for the future with Drommel, the former keeper finds ‘bullshit’. “Actually you say to Drommel: “Because you have a contract for five years, I’m putting you up.” He would not like to be in the shoes of goalkeeper trainer Raimond van der Gouw, who is now dealing with two ‘damaged’ goalkeepers. “I got up right away. It cannot be what happened.”

“You let someone who makes mistakes, and that is part of it, goalkeepers for six months and then the other can play once, he goes under the ball and then we saw him down to the armpits. That Mvogo now knows: I need the whole nothing more to do for years,” concludes Waterreus.
