Shauten, who triumphed in the 3,000-meter ladies on Saturday by breaking the 20-year-old Olympic record, also won the 5,000-meter distance with a new Olympic record – six minutes 43.51 seconds.
Canadian Izabella Veidemane won the bronze medal, finishing 6th in the 5,000-meter distance of Pyongyang four years ago. She finished 4.67 seconds later than the leader in the 5,000-meter Beijing Olympics.
Martina Sāblīkova from the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with a 6.58 second slower finish than the leader, who became the Olympic champion in this distance in 2010 and 2014 and was the vice-champion in 2018.
Four years ago, Dutch speed skater Esme Fischer triumphed in the 5,000-meter Olympic Games in Pyongyang. The silver medal was won by Sāblīkov, while the Russian athlete Natalia Voronin won the bronze medal.
The Beijing Olympics run from February 4 to 20.
