The Bremerhaven basketball players suffered a severe setback in the derby against Rasta Vechta with the 95:109 defeat – only eighth place instead of a playoff place.
After the final siren, the polar bears hung their heads and stared blankly. The defeat in their own hall against relegation candidate Rasta Vechta hurt.
Losing the second division derby with 95:109 (54:54) was not calculated, after all, the Bremerhaven wanted to be sure of a playoff place ten games before the end of the main round. Instead, this harsh setback and only eighth place out of 17 in the table.
We’re not where we want to be. We have a lot to do.
Eisbären coach Michael Mai in Sportblitz
Polar bears defensively too weak
Especially on the defensive. It’s of little use that the polar bears are among the strongest in the league in attack, because of the shaky defense they destroy everything and run after their own claims.
“We made them strong with our defensive weaknesses,” complained coach Mai, “we just weren’t good and let them get into a rhythm.” For Anthony Yebo, the best thrower from Bremerhaven, it is clear what the problem is: “It’s just a matter of the mind. It just has to click – for the whole team.”
Mai and his polar bears don’t have much time left and on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. the duel with the Artland Dragons continues. So the next opponent from the relegation zone and high time that it ‘clicks’.
