Chelsea has successfully won the 2021 Club World Cup title. The Blues continued the dominance of European teams in the competition for almost the last decade.
Chelsea clashed with Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras in the Club World Cup final. The duel took place at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Saturday (12/2/2022) night WIB and ended on Sunday (13/2/2022) early in the morning.
Romelu Lukaku put Chelsea ahead through his header in the 55th minute. Palmeiras managed to equalize nine minutes later through Luan Garcia’s penalty.
The score 1-1 for both teams lasted up to 2×45 minutes. The match was forced to proceed to extra rounds.
Kai Havertz scored Chelsea’s second goal when extra time entered the 117th minute. Goals created from kicks 12 pas.
Palmeiras were down to 10 men after Luan Garcia was sent off near the end of extra time. The match finished with a score of 2-1 for Chelsea’s victory.
This is Chelsea’s first title in the Club World Cup. The 2021 Champions League winners previously reached the final in 2012, but lost to Corinthians 0-1.
Chelsea became the third English team to successfully bring home the Club World Cup title to Queen Elizabeth’s Country. The London club followed in the footsteps of two other Premier League teams, Manchester United (2008) and Liverpool (2009).
Chelsea’s success this time helped extend the positive trend of European teams in the Club World Cup. The Blue Continent’s representatives have always come out as champions since 2013.
