The world has seen how much Srdjan Djokovic (61), the father of tennis star Novak (34), can get upset. Most recently, he caused a stir with conspiracy theories at a specially convened and bizarre press conference when he jumped to his son’s side in the immigration thriller Down Under. Now Papa Djokovic is shooting against Australia again. This time it hit Olympic curlers Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt.
Djokovic father attacks Australia
What happened in Beijing? Australia’s Tahli Gill delivered a positive test ahead of Sunday’s duel with Switzerland in mixed curling. She and her partner Dean Hewitt were already packing their bags, and the Australian Olympic Committee was preparing to return home.
But then there was the Corona U-turn: The Chinese health authorities let Gill, who had already been infected with Covid-19 in January, out of the quarantine hotel. A new PCR test would have shown that her CT value was within an acceptable range. The Aussie duo was allowed to compete against Jenny Perret and Martin Rios – and win.
A found food for Papa Djokovic to dish out against Australia with a good load of anger in his stomach. “Australian, learn from the Chinese how athletes are respected and valued. Shame on you a thousand times!” he rumbled via Instagram.
Corona sting is deep with Djokovic
It’s very clear: the wounds of the visa crime in Australia have not yet healed for Srdjan Djokovic. The sting is too deep that his son and vaccination skeptic Novak missed one of the most important tennis tournaments of the year as defending champion after the corona confusion.
So far it is unclear how Novak will continue. The Serb is still number one in the world and registered his comeback for the tennis tournament in Dubai in February – no vaccination certificate is required in the Emirates. On the other hand, Djokovic threatens to miss the second Grand Slam tournament, the French Open in Paris, in May as an unvaccinated person. France, like Australia, only wants to allow vaccinated athletes.
It’s quite possible that Srdjan Djokovic will rumble again.
