A ball story worthy of a movie. UEFA announced on Monday that it proceeded to a new draw for the knockout stages of the Champions League, at 3 p.m., after recognizing a “Technical problem” which led to the cancellation of the one carried out at noon.
“Due to a technical issue with an external service provider’s software that tells officials which teams are eligible to play the others, a hardware error occurred during the draw. Consequently, the draw has been declared void and will be completely redone at 3 p.m. informed the European football confederation.
During the draw for the knockout stages of the Champions League on Monday in Nyon (Switzerland), former Arsenal player Andreï Archavine took a Manchester United ball out of the bowl when determining Villarreal’s opponent for which was the second poster. An error when the two clubs, present in the same group in the group stage, could not normally compete. The draw was therefore redone in stride, the Spaniards inheriting Manchester City.
A human and computer fault
Problem: the computer system seems to have really excluded Manchester United from possible opponents from another club, Atlético, when the two teams could indeed compete. The draw attendant, Michael Heselschwerdt, therefore did not grab the Manchester United ball when picking from the various bowls all the teams that could challenge the Madrid club. Ironically, the second draw decided: Manchester United will face Atlético in the round of 16.
Update : addition this Monday at 3:30 p.m. of the result of the new draw for Manchester United.
