The accident happened on Sunday afternoon during a fourth division match in Pola de Lena, in the Asturias region of northern Spain. A doctor who was on site during the game administered first aid to the injured. Emergency physicians then approached and tried to resuscitate the 68-year-old – but there was nothing more they could do for him. Guardia Civil officers were also at the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the approximately 30 meter high mast was “completely bent”. According to the mayor of the municipality, Gema Álvarez, the two victims of the accident were local and were regulars at the stadium.
