After the decision of the CAS (Sports Arbitration Court), which allows the young Russian skater Kamila Valieva to continue in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games despite her positive for a prohibited drug, the International Olympic Committee has not been slow to react. “In the interest of fairness for all athletes and National Olympic Committees (NOCs) involved, it would not be appropriate to hold the medal ceremony for the figure skating team event during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, as would include an athlete who has a positive samplealthough whose violation of anti-doping rules has not yet been established, “says the statement.
Also, if the 15-year-old skater were to place in the top three in the individual ice skating event, the IOC would also veto the persea ceremony of this modality. “If Ms. Valieva finishes in the top three competitors in the women’s single skating competition, no flower ceremony or medal ceremony will be held during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.”
Likewise, “the IOC requests the International Skating Union (ISU), for reasons of fairness, to allow competitor number 25 to participate in the free skating modality of the competition corresponding to February 17, in case Mrs. Valieva is classified among the first 24 of the short program on February 15, ”continues the letter.
Finally, to conclude the statement, the IOC has announced that once the conflict over the Russian figure skater has been resolved, the medal award ceremonies will return to normal. “The IOC, in consultation with the athletes and NOCs concerned, will organize worthy medal-giving ceremonies once the case of Ms. Valieva has been concluded.”
