NFL in Germany 2022-2025: Venues, Tickets and More

After the Super Bowl, there is currently only one topic that occupies us: The NFL is coming to Germany this year, more precisely to Munich in the Allianz Arena (spectator capacity 75,000) of FC Bayern.

“We are very excited to welcome Munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family and happy to reward our fans in Germany for their passion by offering them the spectacle of a regular season game,” Goodell said in his press conference.

What we know so far!

The NFL will play two games each in Munich and Frankfurt in the years 2022 to 2025. The Allianz Arena of FC Bayern Munich will kick off in 2022. This will be followed by an NFL game in Frankfurt in 2023. The local Deutsche Bank Park (spectator capacity 51,500) will also host two games. The decision for one location had been expected, but it turned out to be two. Only the third applicant Dusseldorf goes away empty-handed. The selection process began last year when the NFL announced Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf as potential host finalists in Germany.

The NFL will therefore host regular season games here for at least four years. The league’s agreement with Munich and Frankfurt includes commitments to create fan/community programs and other NFL initiatives.

When will the first NFL game take place in Munich 2022?

There is no date for the NFL debut in Munich yet. The official release of the new schedule for the coming season will provide information. The schedule publication of the NFL season 2022 is currently expected for the end of April. The season then begins on September 8th and ends with Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.

The NFL in Munich with the aim of “long-term partnership”

German record champions Bayern Munich have been working with the NFL “since our US office opened in 2014,” said boss Oliver Kahn. “We’re excited to take this next step in our long-term partnership by hosting a regular season NFL game at our home stadium.”

The game in Frankfurt and the plans of the city

“If we are awarded the contract and partner with the NFL, we will provide money for the preparation of inner-city squares to make it easier to host events such as fan festivals,” said sports director Mike Josef recently. Work would also be done on “building structures for football and flag football, especially in youth sports” in order to give “American Football in Frankfurt a real boost”.

How much potential does the NFL have in Germany?

The NFL’s plan is clear: expand the league worldwide and open up new markets. In focus: the constantly growing NFL fan community in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

According to the NFL, there are around 19 million fans in Germany. In a recent survey, however, only just under 4 percent of respondents in Germany named American football as their favorite sport.

In view of the constantly growing NFL fan community and the increasing presence of the league in recent years, the question is not whether but how much growth can be generated for the NFL through the games in Munich and Frankfurt.

At least in the short and medium term, we don’t expect a big boost from the games in Germany. Slightly increased market shares are possible, but the majority of the local sports market is very traditional and immobile. The dominance of football is currently still too strong.

International expansion of the NFL

This means that there will be more international NFL regular season games again in 2022, because the league will return to Mexico next season, while the annual games in London will continue.

Just over two months ago, the NFL distributed the regional marketing rights for the international market. For Germany secured the New England Patriotsthe Kansas City Chiefs around Patrick Mahomes who Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Carolina Panthers the right. These NFL teams are therefore allowed to maintain a regional office in Germany, organize fan events and sell fan articles locally.
