If Lego video games are not in themselves a novelty, considering the over-ten-year commitment on the part of TT Games in proposing adventures based on the most important brands in the film and television world, there are few projects that deviate from the now “classic” formula that will be the basis of the next Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagascheduled for April on PC and consoles.
That could all change soon, judging by the rumors reported by VGC: the Danish giant would have signed an agreement for multiple projects in collaboration with Take-Two / 2K to expand into the world of video games once the exclusive agreement with Warner Bros. and TT Games has ended. Among the titles in the pipeline there would be a football game edited by Sumo Digital (former author of Team Sonic Racing and Sackboy: A Great Adventure) e an open-world driving game entrusted to Visual Conceptsresponsible for sports video games such as NBA 2K and WWE 2K.
Lego is trying to target a younger audience interested in genres other than adventures, and in this sense the idea of focusing on a football game to be launched close to the 2022 World Cup makes perfect sense. Visual Concepts’ driving game should only arrive in 2023with a third project (another sports title based on a prominent brand, probably a declination of other disciplines such as basketball, golf or wrestling in Lego sauce) which will debut later on PC and console.
At present, Lego has preferred not to comment on the rumors concerning its future projects, probably for do not take your attention away from the upcoming game that will tell the whole story of Star Wars from The Phantom Menace to The Rise of Skywalker. Given Lego’s sprawling take on every entertainment brand, be it the intellectual property of DC Comics and Marvel comics or the likes of Harry Potter and Star Wars, it is not excluded that these new projects may also include crossovers among the most beloved characters on the planet, thus increasing the appeal and potential catchment area of the game.
What is certain, at present, is that the Danish brand’s exclusivity contract with Warner Bros. and TT Games seems to be getting tighter and tighter: considering the charm of its bricks and the incredible hold of some limited edition sets, Lego is expected to be expanding beyond belief into one of the most profitable sectors in digital entertainment to try and maximize its revenue.
