Persebaya Surabaya managed to silence the top of the League 1 standings, Arema FC with a narrow score of 1-0. Veteran striker Samsul Arif became the hero of Bajul Ijo with his only goal in the second half.
Playing at the Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Wednesday (23/2/2022), Arema appeared to be pressing since the beginning of the match. Hanif Sjahbandi had threatened the Persebaya goal in the 2nd minute, but the final solution failed to produce a goal.
Arema got another chance through Rizky Dwi Febrianto’s free kick in the 11th minute, but his shot went straight into Ernando Ari’s arms. Four minutes later, Ryan Kurnia’s close range shot could also be secured by the 19-year-old goalkeeper.
Persebaya is not without a fight. There was a chance from Bruno Moreira in the 31st minute, but the ball went off target. In the 44th minute, Alie Sesay’s header which took advantage of Taisei Marukawa’s free kick went wide on the left side of Arema’s goal.

In the second half, Persebaya coach, Aji Santoso, replaced Arsenio Valpoort with Samsul Arif to increase his attacking power up front, and the decision proved to be effective.
In the 79th minute, Samsul Arif who received the ball in the penalty box cleverly outwit Bagas Adi and then fired a hard shot that lodged in the top left corner of Arema’s goal. Adilson Maringa and Sergio Silva tried to close the shooting range, but in vain.
Left behind by one goal, Arema tried to take advantage of the remaining time to score, but failed. Arema even had to end the match with 10 men after Bagas Adi was sent off in injury time for elbowing Samsul Arif. Score 1-0 for Persebaya lasted until the long whistle.
This result makes Persebaya have collected 51 points from 27 matches and is in fifth place in the League 1 standings. While Arema are still in the top position with 55 points from 27 matches.
