According to the latest reports, 2K Games and LEGO are planning a partnership for a series of LEGO-licensed sports games.
According to people familiar with the company’s plans, 2K Games and LEGO have signed a partnership that will include several LEGO sports games.
It starts with a LEGO soccer game developed by Sumo Digital, which is due to be released later this year to coincide with the soccer World Cup. This will be followed by a LEGO open-world racing game from Visual Concepts, which is scheduled for release in 2023. Another LEGO sports title based on a major sports franchise is also said to be in development.
According to the sources, 2K Games is planning to expand its sports portfolio, which currently consists of WWE and NBA titles, and sees LEGO as the perfect partner to appeal to younger players.
The deal heralds a new era for LEGO’s video game division. Previously, the popular building block company had an exclusive deal with TT Games for years. The British studio has been developing various LEGO titles since 2005, often based on licenses from well-known brands such as Star Wars, Marvel or Harry Potter.
TT Games is said to have had veto rights over LEGO titles from other game developers. As reported, Lego does not plan to continue this type of agreement.
Neither 2K Games nor LEGO have officially commented on the reports.
