At the tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, Hamburg’s tennis star Alexander Zverev (24) completely freaked out and hit the referee‘s chair wildly after a defeat. His girlfriend Sophia Thomalla was so embarrassed that she held her hands in front of her face in the stands. Shortly before that, the 32-year-old had already spoken about challenges and new details of their relationship.
Sophia Thomalla and Alexander Zverev have been a couple since last fall. Since then, the presenter has accompanied the tennis star to several tournaments and cheered on her loved one on site. So now at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
Alexander Zverev and Sophia Thomalla have been a couple since autumn
In the podcast “All roads lead to fame” with Paul Ripke, the conversation inevitably leads to Zverev. It’s not always easy to spend time together, reveals Thomalla. “As an individual athlete, you’re on the go all the time,” says the host of the shows “Are You the One?” and “Date or Drop”. She also works as a model and actress. “Coordinating the schedule so that we see each other regularly is a challenge, but doable.”
Due to her relatively flexible jobs, she can also adapt to Zverev’s schedule. However, he cannot spend 100 percent of his time with Thomalla during a tournament. That’s not a problem for the 32-year-old. “We are in a beautiful hotel, close to the water, the palm trees are waving,” she enthuses in the podcast.
Zverev freaks out and attacks the referee
Zverev had already made it clear how important Sophia Thomalla is to him as a support during the games. During the award ceremony of the tournament in Vienna, he called the moderator the “most important person” and added: “Thank you for being by my side recently”.

However, the incident on Tuesday must have been extremely uncomfortable for Thomalla. When Zverev and his doubles partner Marcelo Melo (38) lost 2: 6, 6: 4, 6:10 in the round of 16, the 24-year-old suddenly went nuts.
After the referee decided against Zverev in a tight situation on the line, the tennis star mobbed the referee as “damn idiots” and attacked him with his racket. The ATP then disqualified Zverev from the current individual competition because of “unsportsmanlike behavior”. (aba)
