Arantxa Rus has not been able to continue her great victory in the first round of the heavily occupied hard court tournament in Doha. The number 66 in the world lost in the second round to Tereza Martincová (WTA-42) from the Czech Republic: 2-6, 4-6.
Rus was immediately broken on love twice and then only ran after the facts. In set two, it even went wrong in her first three service games. She broke back twice, but that turned out to be a stay of execution.
Lucky loser
Rus, who had ended up in the main schedule as a lucky loser and beat the stronger Russian Veronika Koedermetova on Monday, missed the 60th place in the WTA ranking due to the defeat. That would have been her highest position ever.
Title defender Petra Kvitová also lost the tournament in Doha on Tuesday. The Czech gave up against Elise Mertens from Belgium due to a wrist injury.
