Lauragais Table Tennis Club Makes Waves at National Championship
The Pirates of Lauragais, a vibrant table tennis club based in Baziège and Ayguesvives, recently showcased their talent at the FSGT French Table Tennis Championship. held in Parthenay, Deux-Sèvres, this prestigious event drew over 200 athletes representing approximately 30 clubs from across France, fostering a competitive yet convivial atmosphere.
as the sole representatives of Haute-Garonne, the Pirates fielded a strong team of five Baziégeois players. Over the course of two intense days, the championship saw fierce competition across various categories, including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The unclassified series proved especially fruitful for the Lauragais athletes. Jean-François and Caroline Charron secured a well-deserved vice-champion title in mixed doubles, while Manolo Durand and Martin Kappler triumphed as French champions in men’s doubles. Caroline Charron further cemented her dominance by claiming the French champion title in ladies’ singles.
This impressive performance highlights the club’s dedication and the rapid progress they’ve made since their establishment in 2018. The Pirates have experienced a steady growth in membership, attracting individuals seeking both recreational and competitive table tennis experiences. Under the guidance of a state-qualified instructor,training sessions are held on Mondays from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.at the Coopé in Baziège, Tuesdays from 8:30 p.m.to 11 p.m. at the Orangerie in Ayguesvives, and Wednesdays from 6:15 p.m. onwards.

Let’s delve into the details. The Pirates secured championship titles in both men’s doubles and ladies’ singles. Additionally, they narrowly missed the top spot in mixed doubles, finishing as vice-champions. What do you attribute this success to? What makes this team so special?
Coach Dupont: It’s a combination of factors. We have a fantastic group of players with natural talent and an unyielding commitment to advancement. The team spirit is exceptional, they truly support and push each other to be their best. Our training sessions are focused and intense, but we also ensure there’s a fun and encouraging surroundings.
You mentioned the club’s growth since its establishment in 2018. How has the club fostered this sense of community and attraction for both recreational and competitive players?
Coach Dupont: Accessibility is key. We offer training sessions in two locations, Baziège and ayguesvives, making it convenient for members. We cater to all levels, from beginners to seasoned players. Speaking of competition, the Pirates were the sole representatives from Haute-Garonne at the National Championship. Does that add extra weight or pressure?
Coach Dupont: It certainly adds a sense of responsibility. We were aware that we were representing not just our club,but the whole region. It fueled their determination to perform at their best and make haute-Garonne proud.
