Europa League: Glasgow Rangers throw Dortmund out

Europa League

Borussia Dortmund was eliminated in the second round of the UEFA Europa League. The German Bundesliga club did not get more than 2: 2 (2: 1) at Glasgow Rangers on Thursday evening and could not make up for the 2: 4 from the first leg a week ago. Jude Bellingham (31st) and Donyell Malen (42nd) scored for BVB. A brace from James Tavernier (22’/penalty, 57′) made Rangers celebrate in the end.

With RB Leipzig, however, a German club made it into the round of 16. The club of ÖFB team player Konrad Laimer, who was substituted in the 65th minute, won 3-1 at Real Sociedad. The first leg a week ago was 2-2. Willi Orban with a penalty shot (39th), Andre Silva (59th) and Emil Forsberg (89th / penalty) scored for Leipzig. The Spaniards only managed to score the interim goal through Martin Zubimendi (67th).

FC Barcelona made it through to the next round with a 4-2 win at Napoli. Jordi Alba (9′), Frenkie de Jong (13′), Gerard Pique (45′) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (59′) scored for the Catalans after the 1-1 draw in the first leg. Atalanta Bergamo, FC Porto and FC Sevilla are also in the round of 16. Atalanta won 3-0 (1-0) at Olympiakos Piraeus and thus also away from home after the first leg (2-1). Although Sevilla lost 0-1 (0-0) at Dinamo Zagreb, they won the first leg 3-1. Porto drew 2-2 (1-1) at Lazio Roma and thanks to the 2-1 win in the first leg they are one round ahead.

“Huge disappointment for Dortmund”

For Dortmund, on the other hand, it was the end of the line. After a strong start with a shot from Bellingham (4′) and a long-range shot from Malen (18′) just wide of the Rangers goal, the visitors suddenly fell behind. After a foul by Julian Brandt, Tavernier converted the penalty safely. Dortmund pushed the offensive and was rewarded. Bellingham didn’t miss the opportunity to equalize from close range.

This goal was the prelude to a competitive and open exchange of blows between the two teams. The fact that the Scots missed a double chance from Scott Arfield and Alfredo Morelos in the 35th minute took revenge only a short time later. Malen scored to make it 2-1 just before the break. After the break, however, Tavernier punished an unsuccessful attempt by Mats Hummels to equalize. This sealed the end of the Bundesliga club.

“There are several reasons. First of all we had them completely in the sack in the first half, so they were well served,” said Hummels. “Then we come out of half-time very badly, I make the mistake to make it 2-2. We almost felt it. In the end we didn’t lose it here, but last week in Dortmund.” The defense chief spoke of a “huge disappointment. In the end we made far too many individual mistakes, myself included.”
