Judo on a Budget: A Secondhand Solution?
Welcome back, fight fans, to another edition of “In the Dojo”! Today, we’re diving into the world of secondhand sporting gear and the impact it can have on accessibility.Joining us is five-time European Judo Champion, Maria Sanchez! Maria, welcome to the show!
Maria Sanchez:
Thanks for having me! I’m always happy to talk about making judo accessible to everyone.
Great to have you. Now, I came across this listing online for a pre-owned judo suit – size 120 – going for a bargain price of €10. What are your initial thoughts on buying secondhand gear for a budding Judoka?
Maria Sanchez:
I think it’s fantastic! Judo can be an expensive sport, especially for kids who are just starting out and growing like weeds. Buying secondhand can be a great way to save money and make judo more accessible, especially for families on a tight budget.
Absolutely. And this particular listing mentions minor wear and tear, specifically mentioning two blue marks on the left knee. Now,wear and tear is normal on any judo gi,but how crucial is it to carefully inspect secondhand gear before purchase?
maria Sanchez:
Inspection is crucial! You want to make sure there are no major rips or tears, that the seams are secure, and that the fabric hasn’t thinned too much. Those blue marks on the knee don’t sound too worrying, but it’s always better to err on the side of caution.
I agree. And the listing mentions it comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. Is that something you’d personally look for when buying secondhand?
Maria Sanchez:
Definitely.Allergies can be a concern, and you don’t want any unwanted odors clinging to your gi. A clean and well-maintained gi is important for hygiene and comfort.
Very important point. This listing also states that the belt isn’t included. Now, belts are a symbol of progression in judo. Would you recommend buying a new belt separately, or does it matter for beginners?
Maria Sanchez:
For beginners, honestly, it doesn’t matter much. They’re focused on learning the basics and developing their skills.
A new belt can be a milestone later on, but for starting, a good gi is the priority.
That’s great advice. Now, this listing is a private sale and states there are no warranties or returns. What are your thoughts on buying secondhand without those typical safeguards?
Maria Sanchez:
It’s a bit of a risk,to be honest. You’re relying on the seller’s honesty and the quality of their description. I would always recommend asking for more photos, asking specific questions about the condition, and if possible, seeing the gi in person before committing.
That’s excellent advice. Maria, what message would you give to parents who are considering buying secondhand judo gear for their children?
Maria Sanchez:
I say go for it! It’s a great way to get started without breaking the bank. Just remember to be careful, inspect the gear thoroughly, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most importantly, have fun on the mats!
*Fantastic advice, Maria! Thank you so much for joining us today. This has been a engaging discussion. Readers, what are your thoughts on secondhand sporting gear? Have you ever purchased a used judo gi or other sporting equipment? Share your experiences in the comments below!
