The global tennis community is reeling from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with players from both nations expressing a mixture of shock, grief, and a fervent desire for peace. Ukrainian stars like Irina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk, who trains at the prestigious Piatti Center in Bordighera, have voiced their anguish and called for international support. Former world No. 13 Alex Dolgopolov issued a powerful plea on social media, urging the “free world” – including Europe, the United States, Great Britain, and others – to stand with Ukraine against what he termed a “crazy regime.”
Adding weight to these pleas is the unexpected stance taken by Russian tennis ace Andrei Rublev, currently ranked No.7 in the world. Following his semifinal appearance at the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, Rublev condemned his president’s actions as “terrible.”
In a heartfelt statement, Rublev emphasized the insignificance of his athletic achievements in the face of such a devastating conflict. He stressed the paramount importance of global peace, mutual respect, and unity, regardless of nationality. Rublev has faced online backlash due to his Russian heritage, but remains resolute in his message of peace. He underscored his commitment to non-aggression, stating, “Even if they throw stones at me, I want to show that I am for peace.”
Rublev’s words are further underscored by his actions. He recently re-posted an image on Instagram symbolizing the embrace between Russia and Ukraine. His partnership with Ukrainian doubles player Denys Molchanov, with whom he won the Marseille Open just last sunday, exemplifies the unifying power of sport. “We are not politicians,” Rublev stated,”but sportsmen, normal people, and sport always unites.”
“Sport Unites: A conversation on Peace and Tennis in Times of Conflict”
Welcome back, sports fans. Today, we delve into a topic that transcends teh court: the impact of the Russian invasion of ukraine on the global tennis community. Joining us to discuss this sensitive issue is three-time Grand Slam champion and former world no. 4, Mats Wilander. Mats, thanks for being here.
Mats: It’s my pleasure. This situation is deeply concerning, and I believe it’s important for us, as members of the tennis community, to have these conversations and express our support for peace.
Let’s start with the immense courage shown by Ukrainian players like Svitolina and Kostyuk. They’ve been vocal about the suffering in their country and have called for global support. What are your thoughts on their response in the face of unimaginable adversity?
Mats: Their strength amazes me. Imagine being worried about your family, your friends, your country, and then having to step onto a tennis court and compete. It takes exceptional mental fortitude. I truly admire their bravery in speaking out and using their platform to shed light on the situation.
We’ve also seen a powerful statement from Andrei Rublev, a top Russian player. He condemned the invasion, called for peace, and even reposted an image symbolizing the unity of Russia and Ukraine. His actions have drawn both praise and criticism. How do you view Rublev’s stance?
Mats: Rublev’s position is incredibly significant. Tennis, like any sport, is a microcosm of the world. And right now, the world is divided.
For Rublev, a top Russian athlete, to publicly denounce his president’s actions takes immense courage. It sends a powerful message that not everyone in Russia supports this war. It’s a message of humanity, of recognizing the shared bonds we have as people, regardless of nationality.
Some argue that athletes should “stick to sports” and avoid political commentary. What’s your take on that?
Mats: I firmly believe that athletes are not robots. They are human beings with thoughts, feelings, and convictions. It’s unachievable to separate athletes from the world around them. When a crisis of this magnitude happens, it’s natural for people to speak out, including athletes. They have a platform, and they have a obligation to use it wisely, to promote peace and understanding.
This situation raises important questions about the future of Russian and Ukrainian players in international competitions. How do you see this unfolding?
mats: It’s a complex issue with no easy answers. Right now, the priority should be on supporting the Ukrainian players and assisting them in any way possible. As for the future, we need to find a way forward that promotes dialogue and reconciliation.
Sport can be a powerful tool for bridging divides. It reminds us of our shared humanity. It’s my sincerest hope that the tennis community can play a role in fostering peace and understanding during this incredibly challenging time.
