FC Barcelona striker Luuk de Jong started his career at De Graafschap, where Steve De Ridder was his teammate. The now 34-year-old striker from Sint Truiden, who also has a past with Lokeren, took De Jong outside the lines in tow.
De Ridder reported to De Graafschap in 2008 and won in that season d’n derby from neighbor Vitesse. “Great party, but it was on a Sunday. And in Doetinchem there was not much to do on a Sunday. So I said: Luuk, I have a good idea, let’s go“, says De Ridder at Insiders on the Belgian medium Eleven Sports.
The two set course for the Carré, a famous disco in Willebroek, between Antwerp and Brussels. “I think we were there at about eleven or twelve: partied all night and drove back in the morning. If I had known then that I was in my car with a capital of several million…”, De Ridder concludes with a laugh.
