This Wednesday saw the death of Dr. Marcelo Escalante, a pediatrician with a long and recognized career in his discipline.
Highly appreciated by his colleagues, a fan of friendship, a person who chose to live different experiences based on the passions that moved him.
One of these experiences was his training as a naval doctor, which allowed him to spend sixty days at sea on the fishing boat Harengus. In this way, he fulfilled one of his dreams.
He wrote in a folder what these 60 days without seeing the earth meant. He did it as an amateur, but later with the help of his friend Silvia Arias, journalist and writer, plus the task of his wife Virginia, he came to edit the book of poems “Altamar” much later. This literary production was presented in November 2019 at the Museum of Fine Arts.
He appreciated the road traveled more than the achievement itself. He knew how to enjoy the processes, learning and evolution. He played rugby, tennis and when he was 68 years old he got a black belt in judo.
On the occasion of presenting his book, he spoke with this newspaper about the value of “getting together with friends” and “creating these situations that are pleasant for me in which small things can be shared.”
Today he left this world, physically. The first messages from other doctors, from his friends and from neighbors who had the opportunity to meet him, clearly express the affection he generated. The permanence of him in his memory, the imprint that he left engraved in our community.
