Nerviano Invests in Holistic Child Development Through Sports
Nerviano is taking a proactive approach to nurturing well-rounded individuals by integrating sports into the educational landscape. Recognizing the profound impact of physical activity on a child’s development, Mayor Daniela colombo has launched the “Educational Value of Sport” project, spearheaded by Councilor Francesco Pompa.
This initiative, set to commence on March 14th, aims to bridge the gap in physical activity exacerbated by the pandemic and promote a lifelong love for sports. It will involve all primary and lower secondary school classes, including kindergarten, in collaboration with 11 local sports associations.
Over 500 hours of free sporting activities will be provided, funded by the municipality. The program will expose students to a diverse range of disciplines, including tennis, volleyball, judo, basketball, kickboxing, Nordic walking, cycling, bowls, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, and athletics.
Each class will have the possibility to explore two different sports over two five-hour cycles, guided by qualified instructors. These sessions will be seamlessly integrated into the existing physical education timetable, taking place either in school gyms or outdoor spaces.
The project’s dual purpose is to reintroduce children to the joys of physical activity and familiarize them with the vibrant sporting community in Nerviano.By fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging active participation, the initiative aims to cultivate a lifelong passion for sports.
The program’s benefits extend far beyond physical fitness. It seeks to instill essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, respect, and resilience. Through engaging and inclusive activities, the project strives to empower every child, irrespective of their abilities, to reach their full potential.
The curriculum will be designed to cater to the diverse needs of all students, with particular attention paid to ensuring full integration for children with disabilities and special educational needs. By nurturing a sense of community and promoting inclusivity, the “Educational Value of Sport” project is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of Nerviano’s youth.

Maria: Absolutely.During my own career, I saw firsthand how sports helped me build discipline, resilience, and teamwork – qualities that transcended the field and served me well in all aspects of life. Introducing these skills early on is invaluable.
Host: The program will expose students to a diverse range of sports, from customary options like soccer and basketball to niche disciplines like Nordic walking and rhythmic gymnastics. Do you think offering such a wide variety is key to engaging young people?

Inclusivity is paramount. Every child deserves the prospect to experience the joy of sports and the life lessons it teaches. By creating an habitat where everyone feels welcome and supported, we empower all young people to reach their full potential.
