Hitting teh Mark: An Interview with Olympian Mariana Avitia on the Rise of Youth Archery

The Andean Patagonian Archery Club has just announced the launch of a new archery school, sparking a debate on the rising interest in archery amongst young people. To discuss this exciting development, we welcome Olympic archer Mariana Avitia, whose impressive career has seen her represent Mexico on the international stage.

Moderator: Mariana, thank you so much for joining us today. The Andean Patagonian Archery Club’s initiative is fantastic news. What are your thoughts on this new school and the increasing popularity of archery among young people?

Mariana Avitia: It’s truly inspiring to see organizations like the Andean Patagonian Archery Club taking proactive steps to introduce archery to young generations. Archery is a sport that requires focus, discipline, and precision – valuable skills that translate beyond the archery range and into everyday life. I believe the rise in popularity can be attributed to several factors, including its accessibility, the competitive nature of the sport, and the growing emphasis on diverse sporting options for youth.

Moderator: You mentioned accessibility. This new school, for example, provides all the necessary equipment, which removes a significant barrier to entry. Do you think affordability is a key factor in making archery more inclusive?

Mariana Avitia: Absolutely. Making equipment readily available and affordable is a crucial step in allowing more young people to experience the joys of archery. It levels the playing field and ensures that financial constraints don’t become an obstacle to pursuing this remarkable sport. Many clubs, like the Andean Patagonian Archery club, recognize this need and are taking commendable steps to make archery accessible to all.

Moderator: The Andean patagonian Archery Club also highlights the importance of certified instructors. How crucial are qualified coaches in nurturing young talent and ensuring proper technique?

Mariana Avitia: Certified instructors are absolutely essential. archery, although seemingly simple, involves intricate biomechanics and technique. Having knowledgeable coaches who can guide young archers in developing proper form, safety practices, and strategic thinking is paramount to their progress and long-term enjoyment of the sport. Unluckily, not all beginners have access to qualified coaches, which can sometimes lead to bad habits that are harder to break later on.

Moderator: Now, on a personal note, what advice would you give to young aspiring archers just starting their journey?

Mariana Avitia: My advice is to embrace the process, be patient, and enjoy the journey. Archery is a sport that rewards dedication and perseverance. Don’t be discouraged by initial setbacks; celebrate every small victory and remember that consistency and practice are key. Most importantly, have fun and cherish the camaraderie that comes with being part of a supportive archery community.

Moderator: Thank you for those inspiring words,Mariana. I think your experience resonates deeply with aspiring archers out there. To our readers, what are your thoughts on the rise of youth archery? Have you ever considered giving it a try? Share your comments below!
